In the spring of 2005 Klamath County hired SOLARC to prepare a master plan to move the Road Department from its existing location to a 34 acre site. Through documentation of the existing facility and employee interviews SOLARC prepared a project program and site master plan for a new campus for the Roads Department.
The buildings are designed such that natural daylight meets most lighting needs. The main shop and office building use night flush ventilation to passively cool the building at night. A ground source heat pump system will provide winter heating. The ground loop heating, augmented by solar thermal panels balance the heating load. A 300kW photovoltaic system (PV) on the roofs will make this the largest PV array in Oregon. The facility will approach a net zero for energy usage.
The new campus will include:
- Vehicle Maintenance Shop
- Secure Parts Storage
- Welding Shop
- Tire Shop
- Sign Shop
- Turck Storage
- Fueling Depot Station
- Truck Wash
- Employee Lockers and Showers
- Employee Lunch Room
- Outdoor Material Storage (Pipes, Culverts, Etc)
- Road Materials Storage (Sand, Rock, Etc)
