Affordable housing project developed by St. Vincent de Paul. The program for the Aurora building includes 54 units of housing above street front commercial retail space. The housing is a mix of studios, one- and two-bedroom units. Support facilities include a community meeting room, outdoor terrace and laundry facilities. The building includes ground floor retail spaces and 4 stories of residential apartments, for a total of approximately 63,000 square feet (50,000 residential, 13,000 retail, storage, public spaces, and mechanical). The project is characterized by a strong emphasis on energy efficiency and permitting. SOLARC, as the energy and mechanical engineering consultant, was asked to design and build a ground-source heat pumping mechanical system for all space heating, cooling, and domestic water heating needs. This ground-coupled heating system is the largest of its kind in Oregon, utilizing over 2 miles of vertical bore for geo-heat exchange beneath the building.
