The Oregon Department of Energy (ODOE) is pleased to announce the recipients of the first State Energy Efficient Design (SEED) Awards. SEED requires state agencies to invest in energy efficiency in construction projects to reduce long term operating costs and be adopters of innovative energy technologies. The awards will be presented to projects that have met the requirements of the SEED program, have significant energy savings, implemented innovative energy conservation measures and serve as models of energy efficiency.
The first three recipients of the award will be the DOC Warner Creek Prison, the U of O Moss St. Children’s Center, and the ODF Tillamook Forest Interpretive Center. As a consultant to Mahlum Architects, SOLARC Architecture and Engineering Inc. provided mechanical engineering, and energy efficiency consulting in conjunction with ESBL.
The University of Oregon Moss Street Children’s Center designed by Mahlum Architects is a new building located on the east edge of the University of Oregon Campus. With SOLARC/ESBL involvement, and close collaboration with the architect, the floor plan was revised to allow shut-down of one wing during the under-occupied summer period.
Ground-coupled water-to-water heat pump provides heating water to radiant floor slab. Minimum ventilation system brings in outside air that is pre-heated with the heat extracted from stale outgoing air through an air-to-air heat exchanger.
Ceiling fans move air for occupant comfort. Ground-coupled water-to-water heat pump creates cool water to circulate through the floor slab for radiant floor cooling. Minimum air ventilation system introduces outside air that is pre-cooled by the energy-recovery heat exchanger.
